The development of abilities such as creativity and innovation is a challenge for higher education. For Digital Electronics major the challenge is to confront students to design new applications. This article presents a methodology that has been taught in a VHDL (VHSIC Hardware Description Language, VHSIC = Very High Speed Integrated Circuit) course to stimulate the development of creativity in designing electronic devices. VHDL is a powerful tool to describe, simulate and implement electronic circuits. As VHDL simplifies the implementation of an electronic device, the course has been oriented to make the students face the necessity to create problems instead of solving the ones designed by professors.
