Socioeconomic gradients in health behaviors such as exercise are extensively documented but the reasons behind these gradients are poorly understood. This study examines a potentially important factor in socioeconomic gradients in one particular context, by estimating how exercise responds to a plausibly exogenous “price shock, ” in the form of weather conditions. Most notably, we find that within cold temperature ranges, a decrease in past-month temperature causes a significant decrease in past-month exercise, and this effect is generally larger for lower education and income groups.
