As individuals age they go through various phases in the labour market and the housing market. Younger Australians often begin their working life living at home with their parent(s) as part time workers in various service industries, some of them while they are studying at universities acquiring HECS debts, and then into more full time occupations. As they move into their late 20s and early 30s they begin buying properties on mortgages (some helped by their parents), as they approach their late forties and fifties they may begin to buy investment properties with a view to retirement incomes.
