Cancer is a major cause of global disease-related mortality, and a well-recognized health-care problem in developed countries in the West (US and Europe).1 In contrast to other leading causes of disease-related death such as heart disease and stroke, the overall mortality rate due to cancer has not significantly improved over the past thirty years.2 In Asia, overall rates of cancer incidence are still compa-ratively low compared to the West for major malignancies such as breast, colon and prostate cancer.3 However, the number of Asian patients diagnosed with cancer is expected to dramatically rise in coming years.
