The adsorption of phenols from dilute aqueous olution by n-a]iphatic amine and Ethomeen clays has been investigated and it is shown that dodecylammonium bentonite is the most active member of the series ethylammonium to octadecylammonium bentonite. On the basis of spatial considerations, thermodynamic data, and electron density measurements a theory of adsorption has been proposed in which it is envisaged that condensation of adsorbate molecules on the organo-clay surface occurs through electrostatic/hydrogen bond forces at the hydrophilic sites and van der Waals forces at the organophilic sites
