For a decade geophysicists have studied global warming using borehole temperature logs. They have used them to estimate the timing of recent warming and its magnitude (1,2,3); to explain the discrepancy between observed air temperature rise and estimates from global climate models (4)(GCMs); to examine temperature trends century by century during the last 500 years (5,6)
