NEW PRENILATED COMPOUND FROM EGYPTIAN PROPOLIS WITH ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from leaf buds and cracks in the bark of various plants, and it is composed of 50 % resin (composed of flavonoids and related phenolic acids), 30 % wax, 10 % essential oils, 5 % po-llen and 5 % various organic compounds. In this work, new prenylated flavonoid, 5,3’,4’-trihydroxy-7-methoxy-5’-C-geranyl flavanone (Isonymphaeol-C) was isolated from ethanol extract of the Egyptian propolis. The structure elucidation was ac-complished by spectroscopic analysis, particularly MS, 1H, 13C, 1D and 2D NMR spectral data. The antibacterial activity of the isolated compound was determined against Gram-negative strains (Serratia sp., Pseudomonas sp.and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus)
