Abstract: this paper presents a simple approach for fault detection and isolation (FDI) that can occur in sensors and actuators of the controlled system. The proposed approach is based on the integration of fuzzy knowledge with analytical redundancy. This approach consists of three phases: residual generation to produce fuzzy symptoms, residual evaluation using fuzzy characteristics and fuzzy decision making to diagnose the fault type. The proposed methodology is tested via simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK for fault diagnosis of a real time flexible link robot. The ARMAX robot model is available for simulation. The obtained results affirmed the potential of the proposed approach to detect faults in robot sensors and actuators
