Scour is a general term for the erosive action of flowing water, excavating and carrying away material from the bed and banks of streams and at the base of piers and abutments of bridges. AREMA members worked with Ayres Associates to update Chapter 1- Part 3: Natural Waterways of the AREMA Manual. The updated material will be a new subsection of the Manual available for individual purchase. The topics include definition of types of scour, methods of estimating scour depth, recognizing and predicting stream instability problems, and countermeasures used to protect bridges from scour and stream instability. A two-day training course has been developed for the new Manual material. It has been presented several times throughout the U.S. and is available for additional offerings. The first day of the training course is recommended for Division Engineers, Roadmasters, Track Inspectors, Structures Supervisors and Bridge Inspectors. The focus is on early detection of scour and stream instability and provides examples of effective countermeasures and countermeasure failures. The second day, recommended for Engineers and Bridge Designers, goes into greater analytical details, with example problems and calculation procedures to estimate scour processes. The secon
