In this investigation, the status of renewable energy technologies in the Caribbean was analysed using Barbados as a case study. Factors influencing the development or lack thereof were studied in the context of the regulation in place. Regulation was assessed in terms of market structures (vertically integrated, single buyer, open market), regulatory strategy (Command and control, economic incentive, persuasion) and regulatory system (rate of return, price cap and performance based). Regulation in the Caribbean was then compared to Germany and Europe in general where environmental regulation has led to some degree of successful implementation.
