Land degradation in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is a serious problem that is threatening livelihoods of the poor who depend on agriculture. The problem also poses a challenge to economic development since economies of most countries in the region are based on agriculture. Land degradation also leads to sedimentation of surface water bodies, runoff and flooding and other off-site effects (Pagiola, 1999; Scherr and Yadav, 1996; Schroeder, 1993; Unruh, et al., 1993) at local and national level. At global scale, land degradation has been identified as one of the factors that contribute to climate change and loss of biodiversity. Contribution of land degradation to climate change mainly results from emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) as a result of bush and crop residue burning and other processes that lead to disruption of the carbon cycle. Degraded land also loses vegetative cover that absorbs the shortwave radiation, leading to global warming (Glasdottir and Stocking 2005). Another effect of changes in vegetative cover is a change in albedo (reflectivity), which changes the absorption of energy.
