Itemization of Phenomena Related to Dreams and Consciousness, and Questions about where Constituent Parts Fit in the AIM Model. Comments on Allan Hobson’s What can brain science tell us about consciousness?

As a biological anthropologist trained in behaviour and morphometry, I have little expertise in concepts of consciousness and dreaming. Despite that, I have put together a fragmentary catalogue of data, hypotheses, explanations, and questions related to dreaming and consciousness from an anthropological standpoint. I start with the idea that dreaming as a conscious experience is considered not to be an adaptation but only an epiphenomenon. In Allan Hobson’s text, dreaming reflects different neurophysiological events associated with REM sleep that serve important functions in the development of the brain and maintenance of its neurochemical balance. I would like to itemize some related phenomena such as dream ontogeny, lucid dreams, autism, and sleep patterns that, examined on a cultural level, help us understand the function of dreaming and the further integration/allocation of these variations into the cube of Allan Hobson’s AIM state space model. The ideas are drawn in part from Antti Revonsuo’s “The reinterpretation of dreams: An evolutionary hypothesis of the function of dreaming”, and from “The role of dreams in the evolution of the human mind ” by Michael S.
