As a biological anthropologist trained in behaviour and morphometry, I have little expertise in concepts of consciousness and dreaming. Despite that, I have put together a fragmentary catalogue of data, hypotheses, explanations, and questions related to dreaming and consciousness from an anthropological standpoint. I start with the idea that dreaming as a conscious experience is considered not to be an adaptation but only an epiphenomenon. In Allan Hobson’s text, dreaming reflects different neurophysiological events associated with REM sleep that serve important functions in the development of the brain and maintenance of its neurochemical balance.
