The crystal structure of a synthetic tetrahedrite, composition cu6.aaAEz.tzFer.u Sb2 7sAs1.3sS13, has been refined using full-matrix least-squares methods to a weighted disagreement index of 4.6Vo for 169 independent observed difractions. The effects of the substitutions of Ag for Cu and As for Sb on the distances and bond-angles in the tetrahedrite structure are separable, as has been noted previously for substitutional effects on the tetrahedrite lattice parameter. The presence of arsenic in natural tetrahedrite appears to restrict the amount of silver present. This restriction can be rationalized crystallographically
