Nursing as a profession appears destined toargue about educational preparation. Thisyear we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the American Nurses Association’s resolution that entry into practice will be at the bachelor’s degree level (as a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing or BSN). Despite the decades that have passed since that 1965 resolution, the majority of applicants to nursing pro-grams continue to choose associate degree nursing programs, often for reasons of convenience and cost. The number of nurses who have a BSN has increased during the past 4 decades, and yet only 44 % of the 2.7 million nurses in this country currently hold a bache-lor’s degree or higher,1 making the entry into practice discussion a continuing hot topic....
