The paper introduces direct torque control for switched reluctance motor drives. The main proposed ideas of this sensorless control are the development of non-linear torque equation, and the accurate identification of machine’s characteristics. These two factors are very crucial to the successful implementation of direct torque control in switched reluctance motors. A preliminary work done is the using of finite element analysis to find the machine’s characteristics of a commercially available 4-phase switched reluctance motor. The flux linkage and torque characteristics obtained are compared with the results from other journal papers. A certain degree of discrepancies between them have been found and analysed. 1.
