This paper reports on the results of an experiment that investigated the response rate and data quality effects of two alternative methods for making initial contact with potential respondents in a sample survey. The study was conducted in a university setting and selected students were initially contacted about their participation in the survey either thru an e-mail message or thru their own customised university portal. Survey findings revealed that the e-mail alternative resulted in a significantly higher overall response rate.
