The following paper describes the cause, course and result of geological engineering investigations of rock slopes. For that the appearances, reasons and trigger of typical rock failures on the one hand and the possibilities of slope stabilization and akin countermeasures, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of them, on the other hand are mentioned. By the geological engineering analysis only kinematic and limit equilibrium analysis are looked at in detail. All that is shown on the basis of an example. This example is the geological investigation of the Weißeritz valley. Reason of this investigation is the reconstruction of the railway, which was destroyed by a high water event.
