Abstract. The purpose of this paper is to study how regular teach-ing simulates non-routine problem solving in the sense that the pre-sented reasoning is creative and the conclusions are justified by ex-plicit reference to mathematical properties of the components. In the situations analysed this is sometimes the case, but in rather limited and modest ways. The teaching is mainly focussed on presenting algorithmic methods by solving routine tasks
