A geometrical description of the excitation codebooks required in CELP systems is used to demonstrate the equivalence of Gaussian, sparse and ternary excitation codebooks. An efficient algorithm for searching a ternary excitation codebook is presented and the real time implementation, on a single DSP device, of a 4.8 and 6.0 kbits/sec CELP speech coder is described. 1
