A lot of efforts are in progress to store point cloud data in a database. Especially Oracle introduced in 11g a new data type called SDO_PC, which has the ability so split point cloud data into chunks and stor-ing these chunks in a separate table including additional information like the minimum and maximum resolution and so on. Microsoft's SQL Server and PostgreSQL missed to provide a dedicated point cloud data type. Both database's give the ability to run only spatial functions; on the one hand with the spatial extender on SQL Server 2008 and on the other hand by using the PostGIS extension on PostgreSQL.
