Abstract– – In this paper the ongoing research and development activities on future nonvolatile memory technologies are described. After reviewing the mainstream nonvolatile memories on the market today, memory concepts based on switching effects in inorganic and organic materials as well as in single molecules are summarized. Finally the pros and cons are compared and conclusions for the near, mid and long-term perspective
