The author wishes to thank all those residents of the Limehouse Fields and Ocean estates who kindly agreed to be interviewed in the household survey. He is also greatly indebted to all the busy and dedicated people who gave up time to answer what must sometimes have seemed some pretty amateur questions in the round of service provider interviews. The household survey was carried out by staff of the Stepney Outreach and Information Service based in Dame Colet House. Many thanks to Kamrun Nehar, Alea Khatun, Hakimul Hoque and Reema Begum for their expert and conscientious work on the survey and to Fokrul Hoque for managing the work and advising how best to do it. The map and the diagram on page 74 were drawn by Hazel Lintott and the cover design was by Judy Herbert of the Media Centre of Brighton University. Both were kind enough to respond expertly to requests at very short notice. Above all a great deal is owed to Dee MacDonald, the Research Officer on the project, who brought a rare combination of skills and commitment to the work. She updated the Interview Schedule, took on much of the day to day running of the project, carried out literature searches, arranged the service agency interviews and conducted some of them, input the data and carried out the statistical analyses, challenged assumptions, made numerous constructive suggestions and never let me forget what the work was really about. In all important respects except the actual writing down of the words she is the co-author of this report
