The variational data assimilation technique has been applied to the reconstruction of a mesoscale oceanographic field from surface velocity data. The dynamical constraint is provided by a nonlinear quasigeostrophic model, which has two layers over bottom topography in a channel. The efficiency of the scheme is examined by twin data assimi-lation experiments. A focus is given to vertical projection: how well the lower-layer flow field and the density field are reconstructed, and how well separation of two vertical modes is achieved.
