The main aims of this paper are to: n examine the development of performance indicators and the related issues in the context of the mission and direction of the Australian Technical and Further Education (TAFE) sector, especially with reference to the recent changes that have taken place in the Victorian TAFE system at both the Statewide and provider levels, and n discuss the findings of a preliminary survey of participants who responded to the authors ’ questionnaire on Performance Indicators administered during a seminar entitled “Performance Indicators and the Quality of Tertiary Education ” held in Melbourne in July 1995
