The goal of the project is to use the federally sponsored loss estimation software, HAZUS (Hazards–U.S.), to project the magnitude of potential losses that might be experienced by the metropolitan New York City area as a consequence of a damaging earthquake. After modification of the default HAZUS datasets for soil and building characteristics, a more cred-ible estimation of losses will emerge and be useful to metropolitan emer-gency personnel, as well as to other public and private stakeholders. It is hoped that the results will contribute to improved disaster mitigation and emergency response plans throughout the area
