Abstract The genetic transformation efficiency of a rice variety is largely determined by its tissue culturability. Establishment of a highly efficient tissue-culture system has greatly accelerated the wide spread application of transgenic japonica varieties. However, such process for indica rice was hampered because this type of variety is recalcitrant to in vitro culture.
