The goal of this project was to design and build a 100:1 scale model of a spar buoy floating wind turbine. This report details the design process used to create the spar buoy, as well as a mooring system. A preliminary design for adding rotating blades to the nacelle is also described. The components were modeled in SolidWorks, then machined using either a rapid prototyping machine or machine tools. A system of accelerometers, inclinometers, and load cells which were developed by a concurrent master’s thesis project was implemented into the model to collect data during the testing phase.
