Abstract—Most of today's important computational problems require hundreds of thousands of CPU hours to solve. A typical High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster (such as a Beowulf-class cluster) can require a significant investment to attain an acceptable level of total processing power. High Throughput Computing (HTC) utilizes available networking and computing environments to perform the same tasks in a comparable time frame but without the investment in dedicated hardware. In a typical enterprise, workstations can be idle for 75 % of each workday. HTC tools manage this unused workstation time in a dynamic cluster configuration to run the same applications as an HPC cluster. HTC therefore creates clusters that any enterprise can alr...
