IAALD AFITA WCCA2008 WORLD CONFERENCE ON AGRICULTURAL INFORMATION AND IT CIACAP – A Latin-American Community of Knowledge in Agro-Plasticulture

In the Latin-American countries of Portuguese and Spanish language, we can find actually a great interest in the use of plastics in agriculture, mainly as greenhouse covers and irrigation elements in intensive production. Using correctly these materials requires a complex technology. This demands specific knowledge that must be adapted to different conditions of those where actually main knowledge is developed, cold or template areas in North-America, Europe and East-Asia. It is necessary to adapt the technology to extremely diverse climatic, social and economic conditions. Along the large territory of our countries there are several experiences, which can be taken in account. In order to improve the specific knowledge about this technology, a project financed by CYTED, the branch for application of Science and Technology for Development of the Ibero-American Organization of States, was approved in order to build a knowledge model about the application of plastics in agriculture in our countries.
