A theory and practice of regions: the case of Europes

Abstract. 1989 is interpreted m the QIU \ of a particular region, Atlantic Europe. This position is derived from a theoretical argument centred on the concept of historical region and drawing on ideas from world-systems analysis and modern social theory. An historical region is defined in space and time; it is constituted of both place and period. The theory is briefly illustrated by different space-time definitions of Europe and then the rise and demise of the most recent 'Europe*, Atlantic Europe made up of the noncommunist countries of Europe during the Cold War, are considered. 1989 will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the key dates of the 20th century, to be ranked alongside such years as 1914 and 1945. Where this particular 'turning point ' will lead to we cannot know, but the future implications of the events of 1989 are bound to be profound, nowhere more so than in Europe of course. Now is the time to look back on the 'Europe ' that has just been despatched to history to appreciate fully just what has been so recently overturned. Only a couple of years ago Hoggart and Johnson (1987, page 105) were lamenting the fact that "Europe " had "lost " Eastern Europe. At the very least 1989 has rectified thi
