Peripheral Interface Controllers (PICs) are inexpensive microcontroller units with built-in serial communication functionality. Similarly, Matlab, a widely used technical computing software, allows serial communication with external devices. In addition, Matlab provides graphical design tools such as Simulink and Dials and Gauges Blockset.
