Underlying the idea of virtual organi-zations is the belief that the primary re-source tapped by organizations to gener-ate sellable products is the knowledge held by their employees. Since knowledge is in-creasingly held in a geographically distrib-uted fashion, and e-collaboration technolo-gies allow geographically dispersed individu-als to collaborate to accomplish common tasks (Kock & Nosek, 2005), it makes sense to think of e-collaboration and vir-tual organizations as closely related no-tions.
