Fragmentation is one of the mechanisms involved in rock avalanches. Quantifying the energy transfer during a rock avalanche can help to assess the influence of fragmentation on mobility. In this paper, two methods are examined to assess fragmentation energy. One is based on the comminution theory and the other on the blasting energy used in mining industry to predict fragmentation of jointed rock masses. These two methods are applied to seven well-documented rock avalanches for which the in-situ block size distributions of the intact rock mass and of the debris deposits are known.
